Have a question for us? Please read these frequently asked questions below!
What do you look for when selecting a script?
Each lab has unique considerations as the level of competition is based on the other scripts we have received for that particular session. We look for scripts that are compelling, have a unique voice, and showcase strong writing skills as shown through Character, Dialogue, Style, and Structure. We also advise that scripts utilize proper formatting that aligns with industry standards.
Can I submit more than one script for consideration per lab deadline?
Yes, you’re welcome to submit more than one script for each lab.
Can writing teams submit scripts to the lab?
Yes, writing teams are permitted to submit scripts as long as one member of the team is female-identifying or non-binary.
Can I submit a script with a male protagonist?
If I’m not chosen, can I submit again in the future?
Absolutely. You’re welcome (and encouraged) to submit again, whether it be with the same project or a different one. While we may not select your script for a particular lab, we encourage you to continue working on your script and send in another submission in the future.
How many scripts are selected per lab?
We select two scripts per lab.
Why wasn’t my script selected? Can you give me some feedback?
As we receive a large number of script submissions, we are unable to provide individual feedback. The extent of our support is limited and we wish we could provide detailed feedback, hold more labs, and, in general, provide more opportunities to help you develop your work. We ask for your understanding as we’re trying our best with the resources we have to contribute towards the creation of female-driven work.
I keep getting rejected. What’s the deal?
First, it’s nothing personal. Second, we want you to know that we’re still rooting for you and your work! We are so thrilled that you are continuing to work on your craft and are grateful for your interest in participating in the lab.
Are the labs public? Can I attend?
Our labs are not open to the public and we cap the number of attendees to ensure our writers get the most out of each session. The sessions are invite-only and comprised of actors and writers offering peer feedback in addition to the industry mentor.
Who are the Industry Mentors?
We have a different Industry Mentor at each lab and announce their name following the session.
I’m an actor and I’m interested in being a reader at the lab. How do I do that?
Great! We ask that you send a headshot and resume to email@example.com (for our Toronto FEM SCRIPT LAB) and firstname.lastname@example.org (for our U.K. SHIFFT SCRIPT LAB). Please note any workshop or writing experience that you may have. If you have a demo reel or even a single scene or self-tape, please send it along so we can have a better idea on how to cast you. We are drawn to actors who are not only talented readers but are also keen to be involved in the development process by asking questions and offering insights.
